Second Hand Smoke Kills
Ask for a Law to Protect You
100% smoke free
Because everyone has the right to breathe clean air! free from the unequivocally proven dangers of secondhand smoke (the smoke we breathe from other people's cigarettes, narguille, cigars and pipes) the National Tobacco Control Program in the Ministry of Public Health – MoPH with the support of "Azm & Saade Association" is launching its second National Media Campaign that calls for a much needed strong law which puts the health of its citizens before all other interests.
This media campaign is a call for all the Lebanese to take action and to demand a law that ensures them their rights first and foremost. The campaign will be launched on the 31st of May which coincides with the World No Tobacco Day.
After it made its final destination to the Administrative and Justice Committee, the proposed law which bans smoking in public places is still under consideration. Lebanon is obliged to protect its citizens from SHS after signing the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2005. The FCTC came as a result of the scientific evidence that proved the dangers of SHS. These evidence also show that the only effective way to protect people is to provide 100% smoke free air.
Even a little second-hand smoke is harmful! Just 30 minutes of exposure to it increases the risk of heart disease in the non-smoker. In Lebanon alone, more than 30 people die each month from passive smoking alone!
The media campaign will be covered on all venues from TVs, billboards, radios, newspapers, websites and cinema theatres all over Lebanon. This comprehensive campaign targets everyone from all the age groups: the worker, the student, the child, the parent, the waiter, the bartender. It tells them that they have rights to a healthy environment. Though these rights are nowhere to be found, it is up to them to demand them. Having a strong law that bans smoking in public places is the first place to start. Without a law, the implementation and the protection of everyone is compromised.
